Advanced Level 5 & 6 - (4 weeks Level 5, 4 weeks Level 6)
Advanced Critical Reading/ Writing
Based on the initial Florida English Language Institute assessment, students placed in Level 5 Advanced will develop critical reading comprehension skills from a wide range of authentic text and materials. The vocabulary is linguistically complex, but with clear underlying structures. Students will continue to develop an extensive vocabulary using context clues to derive new word meanings, take lecture notes and respond to critical questions. They will strengthen writing skills using correct grammar and vocabulary word choices throughout their writing experiences in essays and research papers appropriate for Advanced Level 5.
Advanced Listening/Speaking/Presentations
Based on the initial Florida English Language Institute assessment, students placed in the Level 6 Advanced course will improve their oral comprehension skills in both academic and social setting by listening to taped lectures and news broadcasts, radio and television shows, and guest speakers. Students will develop communication, organization and pronunciation skills needed for effective academic presentations and discussions with an introduction to lecture note taking. Emphasis is placed on oral production of English and skills are further developed as students practice interviewing, summarizing, and giving presentations in class.
