Beginner Level 1 - 4 weeks

Beginner Listening/Speaking

Based on the initial Florida English Language Institute assessment, students placed in the Level 1 Beginner begin the first ESL course that develops the student’s proficiency in oral English and encourages expression on a variety of social and academic topics.  Students learn to listen for specific information and develop confidence to participate in classroom discussions and give short presentations.  Active listening and speaking strategies are practiced in the classroom as well as during cultural excursions.

Beginner Grammar/Writing

Based on initial Florida English Language Institute assessments, the student in Level 1 are individuals who will benefit from intensive practice on application of beginning English grammar structures with simple academic writing tasks.  Students will learn and review basic grammar conventions, use common simple tenses of subject-verbs, and become familiar with writing sentences, questions and statements.

Beginner Reading/Writing/Vocabulary

Based on the initial Florida English Language Institute assessment, students placed in the Level 1 Beginner will develop basic skills in English through the integration of vocabulary skills, reading comprehension, and using correct grammar in writing tasks in the context of guided discussion and relevant topics.  Emphasis on logical reasoning, basic grammar mechanics, comprehension of written text appropriate to Level 1 will begin to prepare students for higher level academic tasks needed for college and business.

Beginner Level 2 - 4 weeks

Beginner Listening and Speaking

Based in the initial Florida English Language Institute assessment, students placed in Beginner Level 2 will build on English speech and production skills for daily communication in social situations, everyday tasks, telephone conversations, and give short presentations and summaries on current topics of academic and cultural interest.  Students will develop basic American English and demonstrate correct pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm patterns of native English speakers.

Beginner Grammar and Writing

Based on the Florida English Language Institute initial assessment, students in Beginner Level 2 will connect grammar with American culture contexts.  Students will develop useful and meaningful grammar and writing skills.  Students will continue to apply basic grammar structures to communicate orally and in writing, make culture connections with language, customs, and everyday lifestyles. A variety of contextual activities encourages lively active learning practicing essential grammar.

Beginner Reading/Writing/Vocabulary

Based on the initial Florida English Language Institute assessment, students placed in the Level 2 Beginner will develop and improve their basic skills in English through the integration of vocabulary skills, reading comprehension, and using correct grammar in writing tasks in the context of guided discussion and relevant topics.  Level 2 will continue to offer emphasis on logical reasoning, improved grammar mechanics, comprehension of written text appropriate to Level 2 will begin to prepare students for higher level academic tasks needed for college and business.
