Intermediate Level 3 - 4 weeks
Intermediate Listening/Speaking
Based in the Florida English Language Institute initial assessment, students placed in the Level 3 Intermediate will learn to comprehend standard speech delivered in many settings, including academic settings. Students will learn to comprehend the main ideas and relevant details of extended discussions, and listen and takes notes on short presentations on a broad variety of general interest topics.
Intermediate Grammar/Writing
Based on the initial Florida English Language Institute assessment, students in Level 3 Intermediate will learn language through meaningful themes and practicing it in a contextualized environment, promoting both linguistic and writing development. Thematic language learning is presented with interesting, culturally relevant formats that prepare students for academic assignments that require correct grammar structure and paragraph format. Emphasis is on learning correct grammar mechanics which are applied to writing tasks.
Intermediate Reading/ Writing/Vocabulary
Based in the initial Florida English Language Institute assessment, students in Level 3 Intermediate will develop reading comprehension from a variety of texts and apply reading strategies to derive meaning from the content of newspapers, magazines, novels, and opinion essays. Language and content in the text is relevant, including with literal and abstract concepts.
Intermediate Level 4 - 4 weeks
Intermediate Listening/Speaking
Based on the initial Florida English Language Institute assessment, students placed in Level 4 Intermediate will build fluency skills with comprehension of main ideas and relevant details of extended discussions or lectures on a variety of academic topics, including those that require some level of inference. Students will draw on a wide range of language forms and build new vocabulary applied to oral presentations and academic discussions.
Intermediate Grammar/Writing
Based on the initial Florida English Language Institute assessment, students at Level 4 Intermediate will develop academic writing skills at the high intermediate level and continue learning grammar in contexts creating connections and models for academic reading and writing. The goal for the student moves beyond simple sentences by applying a variety of verb tenses in more complex sentence structures in paragraph and essay writing. Emphasis is on learning correct grammar mechanics which are applied to writing tasks.
Intermediate Reading/ Writing/Vocabulary
Based in the initial Florida English Language Institute assessment, students in Level 4 Intermediate will develop reading comprehension from a variety of texts and apply reading strategies to derive meaning from the content of newspapers, magazines, novels, and opinion essays. Major learning outcomes emphasize logical reasoning and argument, and critical thinking skills necessary for college reading and writing.
